People Kill More Than 11,400 Sharks EVERY HOUR

A recent paper published by the scientific journal Marine Policy estimated that 100 million sharks are killed per year (the paper said the number could be as high as 270 million). If you’re wondering, sharks kill about 12 people per year.

  1. Depressing. Particularly considering how much sharks get demonised by us. Sharks are not only awe inspiring predators and evolutionary heroes, they are also a key ocean species. Whilst scientists do not agree on the consequences their extinction may bring about, they fear it will be bad. As a diver I can honestly say that, should our rapacious treatment of the ocean cause the disappearance of these fabulous creatures, the world will be a much poorer, less interesting, uglier place.
