Given the scale of the damage and the lack of global political will for transformative change, large-scale restoration to historical conditions is increasingly unrealistic. The most practical path forward involves local adaptation and preserving core elements of biodiversity and ecosystem function.

The concept of refugia offers a powerful strategy within this context. Refugia are areas that maintain relatively stable conditions compared to their surroundings during periods of environmental change. Historically, such areas allowed species to persist through climate shifts like ice ages, later serving as sources for recolonization. Today, we can identify and protect modern refugia—sites resistant to fire , buffered against extreme heat , or maintaining water availability during drought. These areas can act as critical sanctuaries, preserving biodiversity and ecosystem processes that might otherwise be lost. Protecting these “nuclei for future recovery” builds resilience directly into the landscape.
