Siberian Permafrost Methane Shows Growing Eruption: Number of Global Warming-Induced Craters Now Estimated at 20-30

High latitude warming appears to have begun releasing frozen methane. The coming summer may tell. If the process has begun, it will continue contributing to global warming for centuries after we terminate our CO2 emissions.

Siberian Crater Locations

(Siberian methane crater locations. In total, 7 methane blow holes with features similar to the Yamal Crater have now been discovered. Unofficial reports from observers on the ground have local scientists placing the likely count now at between 20-30 original craters with many more secondary craters. Image source: The Daily Mail.)

The ground smoked for hours. Then, with a great flash and an enormous boom, the land exploded. When the smoke cleared, all that was left was a great, black hole. Ejected earth lay scattered around it — sheer sides plunging into the permafrost like some gigantic, gaping gun barrel.

This was the scene last summer in Yamal, Siberia — a region of extreme northern Russia.

Mysterious Holes Emitting Methane Gas

Speculation about the cause of this mysterious hole became rampant. It looked like a sink hole, except for the ejected material surrounding it…

Something Rotten With The Climate — January 2015 Comes in As Second Hottest

“Hot off the heels of a new global temperature record in 2014, January of 2015 hasn’t missed a beat. Global warmth still rages, as bestirred as a Shakespearean prince outraged at loss and betrayal of a once-constant and steady father.”

Stable Sun Not Responsible for Global Warming

New analysis of solar observations dating back to 1610 indicate that the sun is no more active now than in most other times, debunking claims that it is responsible for global warming.

“A proper estimate of the past and present activity of the sun, our main source of light and heat, is crucial in understanding numerous phenomena that occur on Earth, especially to rule out the role of the sun in global warming,” said José M. Vaquero, a researcher at Spain’s University of Extremadura.

Here’s the latest climate science “scandal”

“Skeptics think they’ve debunked global warming. Once again, they’re wrong.

“The latest salvo in the War on Reality comes from the UK paper the Telegraph, which is a safe haven for some who would claim—literally despite the evidence—that global warming isn’t real.

“The article, written by Christopher Booker (who flat out denies human-induced global warming), is somewhat subtly titled “The Fiddling With Temperature Data Is the Biggest Science Scandal Ever.” In it, Booker claims that climate scientists have adjusted temperature readings from thermometers in Paraguay to make it look like the temperature is increasing, when the measurements off the detectors actually show the opposite. The theme of the article is that scientists “manipulated” the data on purpose to exaggerate global warming”  Source: www.motherjones.com.

Australia: Of droughts and flooding rains

“MY COUNTRY”, a famed poem by Dorothea Mackellar, is known to generations of Australian schoolchildren. They will know by heart the stanza I love a sunburnt…

A report by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Bureau of Meteorology project that most parts of Australia will become hotter and dryer.  Soils will degrade, fires will increase, drought will continue, and floods will become more common.  Meanwhile, prime minister Abbot says it’s all normal, and coal burning should continue.

B Team Open Letter Calls For Bold Climate Action at COP21 in Paris

Dear Christiana Figueres (Executive Secretary, UNFCCC), Today, as global business leaders and members of the B Team, we are calling on governments and businesses to commit to bold action at this year’s COP21 negotiations in Paris. Our ambition – a global goal of net-zero greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 – builds on recent talks at … Source: bteam.org

Yay! Global business leaders for zero greenhouse emissions.  Now they have to start buying up elected representatives to bring governments along.

Most Americans Support Action on Climate Change, Poll Finds

An overwhelming majority, including nearly half of Republicans, back government steps to curb global warming, according to a poll conducted by The Times and others.  Source: www.nytimes.com

GR:  We just need to find a way to pop the energy teat out of congress’ mouth.

Something really, really terrible is about to happen to our coral

The last time this happened, we lost almost a fifth of world reefs.

“Coral reefs cover just 0.1 percent of the ocean floor, but provide habitat to 25 percent of sea-dwelling fish species. That’s why coral scientist C. Mark Eakin, who coordinates the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Watch program, is surprised that the warning he has been sounding since last year (PDF)—that the globe’s reefs appear to be on the verge of a mass-scale bleaching event—hasn’t drawn more media attention.

“Bleaching happens when coral loses contact with zooxanthellae, an algae that essentially feeds them nutrients in symbiotic exchange for a stable habitat. The coral/zooxanthellae relationship thrives within a pretty tight range of ocean temperatures, and when water warms above normal levels, coral tends to expel its algal lifeline. In doing so, coral not only loses the brilliant colors zooxanthellae deliver—hence, “bleaching”—but also its main source of food. A bleached coral reef rapidly begins to decline. Coral can reunite with healthy zooxanthellae and recover, Eakin says, but even then they often become diseased and may die. That’s rotten news, because bleaching outbreaks are increasingly common.”  Source: www.motherjones.com

Human population growth’s effects on global warming

Earlier this month, Pope Francis made news when he said that not only was climate change real, but it was mostly man-made. Then, last week, he said that couples do not need to breed “like rabbits” but rather should plan their families responsibly — albeit without the use of modern contraception.  Source: www.latimes.com

GR:  Good.  We need more public discussions of population.  We need to delete the political third-rail image from population and call on our public servants to help slow our growth before nature does it for us.  The article mentions family planning steps taken in Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Malawi.  China and India have well-known national program.  Are there others?
