Survivable IPCC projections are science fiction – the reality is much worse

GR:  Important article.  Even to non-specialists, there is glaring incongruity between the potential disaster and promised political action.  Nick Breeze dissects the issue with interviews and data.

The IPCC’s ‘Representative Concentration Pathways’ are based on fantasy technology that must draw massive volumes of CO2 out of the atmosphere late this century, writes Nick Breeze – an unjustified hope that conceals a very bleak future for Earth, and humanity.  Read more: www.theecologist.org

Urgent: Reserves and parks not enough to protect nature – David Attenborough

GR:  As the human population and impact grows, wildlife is declining worldwide just as in the U.K. The National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat program covers basic ideas.  Start there.  Then, look for opportunities to recommend other sites.  As Attenborough says, many other places that we modify and use can be habitat.

“Broadcaster calls for radical new approach to conservation, urging people to use all spaces from gardens to roadside verges to help wildlife.

“Speaking at the RSPB’s Conference for Nature in London, Attenborough said it was now understood that British wildlife was in grave peril of disappearing. “50% of the hedgehog population has gone in 25 years, 90% of the wildlife meadows have disappeared in 100 years; 60% of all wildlife is diminishing and in danger, with 10% doomed to disappear in the next decades. Nowhere in Britain is unsullied, is unaffected by human action. We now have a huge population living cheek by jowl with nature.”  Source: www.theguardian.com

Monsanto’s Roundup system threatens extinction of monarch butterflies – report

Monsanto’s Roundup Ready system – a potent herbicide combined with genetically-modified seeds that can withstand it – has decimated the monarch butterfly’s only source of food in the Midwest, putting it on the edge of extinction, according to a new study.  Source: rt.com

GR:  Evidence indicates that Monsanto is the principal cause of declining bees and butterflies.  The article includes an interesting diagram showing the personnel overlap between Monsanto and the U. S. Government.

“Turtle dove populations in Britain are declining so rapidly that they may be entirely gone from the country in a eight years’ time, scientists from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds have warned.

“Turtle dove numbers in Britain have dropped by a whopping 93% since 1970, the fastest decline of a bird towards extinction in British history.

“Moreover, scientists warned that turtle doves are simply the worst affected of the migratory birds that spend the winter in Africa and fly to Britain in the springtime to breed. Eight out of Britain’s twelve most threatened bird species are African migratory birds” (read more).

Life – a status report

Species are disappearing quickly — researchers can only guess how quickly.

Source: www.nature.com

GR:  The status report on life is only an estimate.  Our lack of knowledge of Earth’s unique creatures would be embarrassing if the great dying we’re causing did not evoke more potent emotions.
